Enjoying the beauty of small, medium, and large flowers can be very “graph-tifying. (get it? “graph” and “gratifying?”) From our “Math and Nature Connections” professional development event at the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx.

A lovely photograph of Dale Chihuly’s glass sculpture from the professional development day at New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx.

754X has hatched a brilliant idea: City Fresh Eggs from the Bronx. The students collect, clean, and package the eggs laid by the school chickens. Here is the final product!

Here are some photos from the 373K garden. You can see the new greenhouse being constructed and some beds being prepared for spring planting. Some plants from last year have already come back up, including everybody’s favorite– strawberries!

Here are some pictures from the 993Q rooftop garden at Frank Sinatra High School. We are getting our garden ready for the warm weather! This morning we planted some asparagus.  Our students have been composting and are seeing the benefits within our soil!

District 75 teachers gathered last week for a fun and productive workshop about hydroponics and indoor growing. Indoor methods are great to use if you don’t have outdoor space or it is too cold to go outside. If you missed the PD but want to be part of the movement, please send an email to ccoffin@schools.nyc.gov to be added to our indoor gardening group. We can’t wait to see the results!

Thank you science teacher Dianne Hilaire-Newton and assistant principal Lori Heffez for the photos. The bell pepper was grown indoors at 36K @224 and the outdoor photos are from 36K @ Flatbush Town Hall. Nice work!

Thanks to teacher Melanie Tiang for sharing these photos of her students beginning their year-long garden investigation at the New York Botanical Gardens. Students from 10 different schools have been exploring, making observations and collecting data in Brooklyn and the Bronx and will be sharing their findings with us at the end of the year. Great work, everyone!

Teachers, there are a few spaces still available for the D 75 Hydroponics PD coming up next week. You will learn about both simple and complex systems made from reusable everyday materials, and will construct at least one model to take back to the classroom. To register, got to http://www.district75pd.org and register under Applied Learning. We hope to see you there!

The PLG 101 Workshop met at 373K. As you can see, there is nothing contrary about this garden! Thank you Maura Flanagan for showing us your students’ green thumbs!
