Students at the 993Q Queens Innovation Center prepare for a Farm To School event with Chef George. They chopped, peeled, grated, and tasted red carrots from the farm that they mixed with fresh lettuce greens from their hydroponic tower and a homemade vinaigrette. Delicious! Check out this video they made about the event.

On Friday, Ms. Benasaraf hosted the district’s first “Pick Your Own” Farmers Market at 396K @ 181.

“I wanted to share some pictures from our farmer’s market that took place during today’s gallery walk! Students and parents who visited the room had opportunities to pick tomatoes, herbs, and lettuce directly off our towers to taste and to bring home in provided bags!”

Teachers at the Math in the Garden PD investigated tree pits and a local playground for patterns, shapes, and measurement. They found math all around us!

754X J.M. Rapport School in the Bronx is the first D75 school to open an FFA chapter in NYC!  Mr. Masefields’s students run a small farm with hydroponics, aquaponics, chickens, tilapia shrimp, and an outdoor garden, and they visit local farms and botanical gardens each month.

Ms. Macaluso’s students at 255Q are putting their tower garden to work! Check out this photo they shared of their latest crop.

396K celebrated the opening of their new STEM lab at the 181 site with a ribbon cutting, speeches and a student-led tour. The new space is home to a hamster, a tortoise, fish and some seedlings that were newly planted. Great work, everyone!

Look at this beauty spotted during our teacher workshop at NYBG in the Bronx. Can you identify which type of tree it is?

Students from 721M and some of the district coaches took the ferry to the Governor’s Island Urban Farm and Teaching Garden to make connections between the food the students grow in their hydroponic grow tower for the café and the way that food is produced on a farm. They planted beans, tasted strawberries straight from the patch, and got to know some of the worms that were busy composting our food scraps.

Garden Day 2024 was a success! We had a beautiful spring day of sharing, leading tours and exploring in the gardens at BBG. Nearly 400 students from 42 classes around the district participated in Garden Partnerships this year with a focus on the theme of TREES. Check out the class presentations on our Garden Day Wakelet page and the compilation video here.
