D75 Teachers attended a PD at 754X on January 23rd led by hydroponics teacher Michael Masefield. They learned about the different types of systems, did a tower garden building challenge, and even got to meet the chickens (and bearded dragon and turtle and aquaponics fish)!

Students at 396K @ 91 planted seeds for their new Tower Garden in their brand new STEM Classroom. Stay tuned to see their progress!

Students in class Y48 from P138M at Park West High School participated in an Evergreen Walk at the New York Botanical Garden in the fall. Students used their 5 senses to identify and engage with parts of evergreen trees, like pine needles and pine cones. Students also enjoyed making their own balsam sachets to take home. It was a unanimous vote-they smelled great! We are looking forward to our next outing!

Students from The Riverview School (277Q @ 485) are serious about gardening. Here they can be seen propagating and preparing plants for their holiday plant sale. You can also follow them on Instagram @riverview_produce_485 to keep up with their work!

As part of the BBG partnership, students from 753K @ Aveyron Transition Academy make visits to the garden and take care of their plants in school. They also work at Mount Prospect Park doing cleaning and maintenance. As you can see, sometimes they get to take a break to smell the roses!

Check out some photos of the students from 233Q @ Metro High School as they prepare their tower garden, plant seeds, and harvest herbs for a snack!

We are

Willing when we use our voices to talk to our friends.

On Task when we harvest swiss chard.

Responsible when we do our work to sort and package vegetables.

Kind when we help our friends.

At 177Q, Ms. O’Donnell received a Literacy Grant from NY Agriculture in the Classroom to develop, plan and provide instruction on raising chickens!

“Here at 177Q we have watched our chicks grow into chickens but we’ve seen our students grow as empathic and engaged young adults. Whether we are mucking their coop or just spending time with them, the love shared between our 8 chickens and our school community is palpable. We love Nugget, Parmesan, Kit Kat, Dumpling, Popeye, Meatball, Flash and Queen Elizabeth, we are so eggcited to watch them grow.” – Ms. Alanna O’Donnell, 177Q
